Rumor going around Twitter today (what a reliable source) is that Bernie has set his sights on social media accounts that use variations of “F1,” “Formula One,” or “Formula 1" in their names.
It appears that using these trademarked terms is no longer going to be allowed for those not on Bernie’s approved list. Accounts are allegedly being taken down without warning by Twitter.
On top of keeping people from watching it (see: no more free-to-air TV for F1 in UK in 2017), Bernie also wants to keep people from talking about Formula...
Uh...
I mean Grand Prix Racing.
My lawyers have informed me that I’m no longer allowed to refer to the open-wheel racing series by its proper name.
So, who’s excited for the unspecified Middle Eastern racing go-round this weekend?

Can this sport get any more backwards. I still can’t get over how circuits have to pay millions to be able to host a race, pay to actually host the race, and then give up anything they may make from advertisements or merchandise, leaving the only way to get some of the cost back being the sales of tickets.

So, for news outlets like F1 Racing or F1 Fanatic, are these guys going to get lawyered? I don’t see how you can specify that you specialize in news for a specific sport when you can’t even name the sport which has been in your name for years.
I mean, despite the trademark, doesn't the fact that these outlets have been around for a while (maybe not F1 Fanatic, but F1 Racing magazine has been around since 1996) somewhat negate the legitimacy of a trademark protection claim? I'm not a lawyer but if someone here is good and lawyering it'd be nice to have some clarification.

lol, so all of us should just start creating burner twitter accounts with F1 in the title.

Like I said, it’s all rumors and allegedlies and what now so I don’t know what if any accounts have actually been taken down. F1 Racing Mag is still up, and actually Tweeted about the rumor (referring to it as “F1 suing fans”).
If they’re actually taking down accounts, I would figure media accounts would be safe.

This is why trademark law requires that you actively defend your trademark. These publications could argue that F1 didn’t for long enough that they shouldn’t be able to enforce it against them.

The entire time I thought you were talking about Bernie Sandwich and I was so confused. Yeah Bernie Eccleston can eat a flaming bag of poop. I don't even care about F1 racing, but everything I've heard about the guy is negative.
